While walking home from the bus stop this evening, I noted a curious, familiar scent. The rain had stopped, the sun was peeking through the clouds, and the world was suffused with the odor of wet and flowers. It was a smell I’d smelled before, but for the life of me, I couldn’t quite remember where.
And, just as I reached the end of my little journey, it hit me. Flowers? Damp?
It smelled like the laundromat.
I had a brief image play through my mind — that all of the local laundromats were blooming, their linty pollen wafting in the breeze, to fertilize the next generation of laundromats in a wholesome, organic sort of way. Newborn rows of washers and dryers taking root in an abandoned Taekwondo studios or car audio stores, perhaps.
As a result of this, I realized two very important things. First, I need to get more sleep. Second, I should probably listen to the radio or a podcast or something while I walk home.
