The naked wrist

Habits are powerful things (at least, they are in my case; I don’t know what your life is like). I was reminded of this recently, when the battery in my wristwatch died. I’ve spent the past couple of days absentmindedly glancing down at a dull, distinctly uninformative appendage, and then kicking myself.

I will have to replace the damn thing soon — the watch battery, not the wrist — but I am torn, because I am a cheapskate, and I’m not sure I want to spend the money. I already have a cell phone, the modern equivalent of the old-school pocket watch. As cheap as digital watches are these days, the chance to avoid spending even a tiny amount of money is very tempting. All I’d have to do is change my habits.

After the last two days, though, I’m not sure I’m up to it. When checking the time was as convenient as looking down at my wrist, I hardly thought about how much a pain in the butt it is to have to dig out my phone to perform the same task. I’m an obsessive time-checker, so it’s actually a problem that keeps coming up.

Relax? No, my day is far too full of plans  to be casual about what time it is. Things to do, places to be, and all that.

It’s going to irritate me, but I guess I’m going to have to spend the money, for my sanity’s sake. The good news is that it’s actually not much more expensive to buy a new watch than it is to buy a battery for the old one, so I get to have fun looking around for something different. I’m pleased and horrified.
